Observation: Seeing the Child Who Is Not There, Yet
With Nancy Coyle
Maria Montessori states that our job as educators is to observe, observe
and then to observe some more. Allowing ourselves to be open to the
child before us and seeing the potential is one of the hardest tasks in
teaching. Too often we become mired in expectations, curriculum
guidelines, and summative evaluations. We forget the process, the
importance of skill development and the isolation of difficulty within a
formative evaluation procedure. This workshop will explore observational
techniques that assist in planning and providing for varying individual
student needs.
ABOUT NANCY COYLE
Nancy Coyle is the Director of the Toronto Montessori Institute. Nancy's
faith in the child has grown stronger through her 30 years experience in
education.
1:00 pm - 3:30 pm
Addressing Learning Differences: Supporting Student's Individual
Strengths and Needs in the Montessori Environment
With Sari Weinberg-Binder
This presentation provides an overview of the interrelatedness of
development and learning and its relationship to understanding and
meeting children's individual needs.
Rather than looking at symptoms alone,
individual differences will be discussed within a developmental
framework in order to ensure that we can meet their needs. Discussion
will include defining learning differences, reviewing
assessment/observation techniques. Strategies to gain further
individualized information to assist with program planning, behaviour
management and communication with parents and professionals will also be
examined.
Participants will be introduced to:
· Developmental and relational models that positively impact our
understanding of children's individual profiles and behavior
· Learning difference terminology
· Resources for observing, screening and supporting children's
strengths and needs, individual working/learning skills, temperment,
social/emotional skills within the classroom setting
· Referral and resource networking i.e. next steps
· Practical guidelines on communicating with parents
